La Biblioteca
Aperta al pubblico nel 1980, la Biblioteca di Monte Romano si è sempre caratterizzata per la promozione e l’organizzazione di molteplici attività culturali e di valorizzazione del territorio. La sede è oggi collocata al piano terra dell’edificio di inizio Novecento, ex scuole elementari ed attualmente sede degli uffici comunali.
La biblioteca è dotata di due ambienti principali che prevedono:
- Una sala accoglienza con tre postazione internet;
- una sala lettura dotata di numerosi tavoli per lo studio e di più di seimila libri. Al suo interno si conserva anche l’Archivio Storico del Comune di Monte Romano le cui carte sono datate a partire dalla metà del’Ottocento.
The Library
Opened to the public since 1980, the Monte Romano library has always been characterized by the promotion and organization of multiple cultural activities and the enhancement of the area. The library is now located on the ground floor of the town hall, which was built at the beginning of the twentieth century, and was the seat of the elementary school in the past.
The library is equipped with two main rooms, which include:
- A reception room with three internet stations;
- a reading room featured with numerous study tables and more than six thousand books. It also houses the Historical Archives of the town hall of Monte Romano, whose papers date back from the first half of the nineteenth century.
La Storia dell’edificio della Biblioteca
Dall’Archivio Storico del Comune di Monte Romano si rintracciano le prime notizie sulla costruzione di questo palazzo oggi destinato a sede del Comune e dei suoi uffici: al 1898 risale il primo progetto che individua al piano terra la funzione di scuola maschile, femminile e di scuola infantile mista; collegata a questa zona c’era un grande giardino diviso in due parti da un muro per distinguere la zona dei maschi da quella delle femmine e dei bimbi dell’asilo. Il primo piano ospitava la casa comunale che precedentemente era collocata presso “l’Isola dell’Orologio”: un progetto conservato presso l’Archivio Storico del Comune (busta 626, fascicolo 15) ci informa che nel 1908 verranno realizzati mobili in legno dalle maestranze locali, il banco della stanza della giunta, armadi, tavoli e sedie per la stanza del segretario e per l’archivio. Nel periodo fascista la facciata si arricchirà con la costruzione di un balcone, e sempre in questo periodo nella piazza di rimpetto al palazzo Comunale verrà realizzata una nuova fontana in stile 900, su disegno del prof. Lavaroni di Viterbo con otto getti d’acqua, figure di pesci alla base e nella parte superiore i fasci littori che verranno rimossi con la caduta del regime.
The History of Library building
The history of the building can be found in the historical archieves of the town hall:
the first project dates back to 1898, and destinates the ground floor to the primary school, which was separated between boys and girls, and the mixed kindergarte. A large garden, also divided by a wall in two parts to separate boys and girls, was linked to this area. The first floor housed the town hall offices, that were previously located at the clock tower (Isola dell’orologio).
In a project preserved in the Municipality’s Historical Archives (envelope 626, file 15) is written that, in 1908, the local artisans made the chairs and the desk of the council chambre, and the tables and chairs for the secretary’s room and the Archieve.
During the fascist period, a balcony will be constructed to enrich the facade of the building and, in the same period, a new fountain will be constructed in the square located in front of the building with an architectural style tipic of the 1900’s. The project of the fountain was realized by the professor Lavaroni from Viterbo, and included: eight jets of water, figures of fish at the base and, in the upper part, the lictorian fasces that will be removed with the fall of the regime.
